you get first term by substituting n=1 into the given formula for An.
Note that I fixed the SUBSCRIPT which you had presented as an Exponent on A (which was not correct).
A1 = -1 and BTW all terms are negatives because the squaring does not operate on the unary minus.

There is nothing whatsoever wrong with the words, which simply tell you what to do, which is very simple, I believe.
No steps were omitted...substituting 1 in place of n gives you A1 = -1.
In my additional remark, I used the word unary. It means a - sign in front of something, which gives you the opposite of what follows.
I encourage you to consult with your teacher, either by asking a question in class, or one-on-one with the teacher.
