The number of passengers on an airline rose fairly steadily from about 200000 in 2005 to about 350 000 in the year 2010. (a) How many years are there from 2005 to 2010 inclusive (b) What was the average increase in the number of passengers per year? (c) Estimate the total number of passengers from 2005 to 2010 inclusive.

a)  There are 6 years from 2005 to 2010 inclusive;

     2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010

 

b)  Average increase:  Our average will be the difference

in the beginning number and the ending number divided by

5 ... not 6 ... because we raise the number 5 times in going

from year 2005 to year 2010

 (350000-200000)/5 = 30,000 per year

 

c) In thousands your expected number of passengers per year is:

    200+230+260+290+320+350 = 1,650

 

    Total estimated passengers inclusive:  1,650,000
