Hi Christina;
It is my understanding that the United States decided it could not wait to use such atom bomb because the German military had a simultaneous invention and was likely to use such against us. However, it is also my understanding that the German military did not invent a transport devise (i.e., airplane) to deliver this bomb across the Atlantic Ocean. So it could not have possibly been a threat to us, although it may have been to our allies of France, Great Britain and Russia.
This bomb was used twice against Japan. If you look at a map, the distance between Hawaii and such nation is not substantial. We had the aeronautical technology to reach it.
Another issue experienced by the United States military in making the decision to use such, was the fact that the Japanese have a strict cultural practice against any act of surrendering. In simpler terms, the war was destined to go on endlessly. If we did not want to continue, either we would have to surrender, or drop such bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
If the decision were mine, I do not know what I would have done.
