 2 Variables are in direct relation when their ratio is constant  value. i.e.  X  = K

 Examples  are conversion of units to each other.

 

   1 inch to centimeter is 1 to 2.54 , this just says that 1 inch = 2.54 cm

 

      then if we want to find out how many centimeter are in 12" inch( 1 ft) :

 

           1 "        =     12 "        

          2.54 cm        X

 

           X = 12" * 2.54cm = 30 .48 cm

 

        Y = K        K is called constant of proportionality, in example of inch to centimeter k =  1   = 0.394

        X                                                                                                                         2.54

Direction variation relationship means directly proportional.  The relationship involves multiplication, not addition.

x/y=18/11

Cross-multiply...

18y=11x

y=(11/18)x

y=(11/18)(18)

y=11

y=(11/18)(36)

y=22

y=(11/18)(54)

y=33

 

(x,y)...(18,11), (36,22), (54,33)
