To make a perfect square of u² + 16u, add c such that:

 

a = 1

b = 16

c = b² / (4a) = 16² / (4*1) = 64

 

u² + 16u + 64 = (u + 8)(u + 8) = (u + 8)²

Take the middle term (16)....divide it with 2..(16/2=8)  .....square it(8^2)=64

 

                     

u^(2)+16u+ 64

 

=(u+8)(u+8)

 

=(u+8)^2
