a building in a city has a rectangular base. The length of the base measures 60 ft less than twice the width. The perimeter of this base is 900 ft. What are the dimensions of the base?

the width is W, so the length of base is 2W - 60 

 

2 (W + (2W - 60)) = 900

          2 (3W - 60) = 900

              3W - 60  = 450

                      3W = 510

                       W  = 170

2W - 60 = 2 * 170 - 60 = 280

 

The width is 170, the length is 280
