I don't know how to explain this to my soon to be 4th grader:

There are 765 marbles in a bo.  There are twice as many blue marbles as green marbles.  There are 3 times as many red marbles as blue marbles.  How many red marbles are there in the box?

David W.

You may find that the best explanation is not the solution to the problem, but the checking of a possible answer.  That is, once there are numbers for each of groups of marbles, have your 4th grader verify that there are "twice" and "3 times," etc.  That makes the solution easier to understand.  Oh, and try it once or twice with wrong answers to see your student's reaction.
