"rate of change" is another term for slope. So are incline, grade/gradient, and slant. Slope is sometimes called "rise over run" because it is the increase in y-values divided by the increase in x-values (so + means increasing y-values as x-values increase and - means decreasing y-values as x-values increase). Bigger numbers mean steeper slope.
The slope-intercept form of the equation of a line is: y-mx+b
where m=slope and the point (0,b) is the y-intercept
For the equation: y=-4/5x+175
the rate of change (slope) is -4/5.
That means that the y-values decrease by 4 for each increase of 5 in the x-values. On a graph, this line slants downward as you move to the right.
