Grindle's method for of combining like terms for BEGINNERS
Example: n-10+9n-3
Step 1: Put parentheses around EVERY term; (n) - (10) + (9n) - (3)
Step 2: Replace all subtraction symbols with an addition symbol AND put a negative symbol INSIDE the parentheses of the term; (n) + (-10) + (9n) + (-3)
Step 3: Move the "n" terms so that they are together; (1n) + (9n) + (-10) + (-3)
Special note (n) = (1n)
Step 4: Add the "n" terms together; (10n) + (-10) + (-3)
Step 4: Add the "n" terms together; (10n) + (-10) + (-3)
Step 5: Add the "number" terms; (10n) + (-13)
Step 6: Remove parentheses; 10n - 13
Another example: -x + 10 + 9x - 3
Step 1: -(x) + (10) + (9x) - (3)
Step 2: (-x) + (10) + (9x) + (-3)
Step 3: (-1x) + (9x) + (10) + (-3)
Special note (-x) = (-1x)
Step 4: (8x) + (10) + (-3)
Step 5: (8x) + (7)
Step 6: 8x + 7
I hope this helps you.
