2g + 7 - 6g
Rearrange to put common variables together:
2g-6g+7
How many g terms do we have?
There are 2 of them and we take away 6 of them
2-6=-4 .... There are a total of -4g in the expression
2g+7-6g= -4g +7
We cannot combine the 7 with the -4g because at
the moment we don't know the value of -4g since
there is still a variable in it.

Try this one as an example:
2x - 3y + 5x +8y -12
= 2x + 5x -3y + 8y -12
= 7x + 5y -12
Hope this helps.
