How do you get the answer 2x-x=x

I do not understand how 2x-x=x

Add x to both sides to get

 

2x = 2x

 

Divide both sides by 2 and we see that

 

x = x

 

Now we can clearly see that any value of x is a solution. This is a situation where there are infinitely many solutions instead of just one like you are used to seeing.

This is no different than saying

2 apples minus 1 apple = 1 apple

As an equation this would be:

2a - a = a

a = a

 

2x - x = x

x = x

If you factor out X, it becomes X(2-1). With basic subtraction, 2-1=1. This means 1xX=X
