Why did nearly all states try to weaken the executive branch?

I want to know why did nearly all the states try to weaken the executive branch?

Because of their history with the Colonial governors. All the colonies had to represent them was their 'legislatures" There was no separate judicial branch in those times either. But as it turned out the legislatures after the Revolution were dominated by inexperienced and incapable folks trying to make money and gain popularity.
