I assumed that "Jack" worked 40 hours at his regular wage, + 4 overtime hours, perhaps that accounts for the vastly different answer. Does the question specify that the $66 was just from overtime hours worked?
Here's my work:
overtime wage = regular wage + $3/hour
$66 = regular wage * 40 hours + overtime wage * 4 hours
$66 = regular wage * 40 hours + overtime wage * 4 hours
$66 = 40x + 4(x+3)
$66 = 40x + 4x + 12
$66 = 44x + 12
$54 = 44x
$1.22727 = x
so: regular wage = $1.23/hour
Check the work:
$66 = ($1.23 * 40) + [$(1.23 + $3) * 4]
$66 = ($1.23 *40) + (4.23 * 4)
$66 = $49.09 + $16.92
$66 = $66.01
$66 = 40x + 4x + 12
$66 = 44x + 12
$54 = 44x
$1.22727 = x
so: regular wage = $1.23/hour
Check the work:
$66 = ($1.23 * 40) + [$(1.23 + $3) * 4]
$66 = ($1.23 *40) + (4.23 * 4)
$66 = $49.09 + $16.92
$66 = $66.01
