Is (-1) the same as the absolute value of -1? (algebra 1)

  My teacher didn't really go through this, since I skipped 7th grade math and pre-algebra in one year.. I'd really appreciate it if you could help

(-1) is the same as the number -1

 

absolute value of -1 = l -1 l

 

                             = distance between -1 and 0 on the number line                                     

                             = 1

 

So, (-1) ≠ l -1 l

absolute values are always positive, so the absolute value of -1 is 1.
