Roger F is right, so this is just another way to solve this problem:

 

For 1AM to noon:  1    2   3  4   5   6  7  8  9  10  11  12   For 1PM to midnight I will write the hours in reverse order:

                          12 11 10  9   8   7  6  5  4    3   2    1   Check out the sums:

                        --------------------------------------------

                          13 13 13 13 13 13 13 13 13 13 13 13 = 13*12 = 156

Do you mean the total number of strikes over 24 hours? Or do you mean how many strikes will there be when it strikes at 1 o'clock next day? That answer, of course, is 1.

 

If it's the total number of strikes, then it's 1 + 2 +3....+ 12 all multiplied by 2, because then it starts at 1 again 12 hours later.

 

So the final answer is 78*2 = 156 strikes
