Which sentence is correct: "He stared, smiling at me" or "He stared, smiled at me"?

My beta reader says the second one is correct, but to me, it sounds weird. What do you think?

That's all I had. According to me it should be HAVE DONE. But according to my friend it should be HAD DONE.
