Every few years, PMI conducts studies to find out what are the latest trends in the project management profession and how those changes impact project managers' responsibilities. The PMP exam is then updated to reflect what is happening in industry. PMI published the new exam outline on June 30, 2019. You can read it here.
In summary the new format that is updated in July of 2020 will focus on three Performance Domains instead of the five domains in the current testing format. The domains in the updated (and more difficult) exam include:
#1 People: Emphasizing the skills and activities associated with effectively leading a project team.
#2 Process: Reinforcing the technical aspects of managing a project.
#3 Business Environment: Highlighting the connection between projects and organizational strategy.
