Let Micheal's current age be "M" and Brandon's current age be "B".
Then, if Micheal is 12 years older than Brandon,
M=B+12. ---> Equation (1)
17 years ago, Micheal is M-17 years old and Brandon is B-17 years old.
If 17 years ago, Micheal was 4 times old as Brandon, then
M-17=4*(B-17) ---> Equation (2)
Now, we have two equations with two unknowns. Let's solve those.
Substitute for M in Equation (2) using Equation (1),
(B+12)-17=4*(B-17)
B - 5 =4*B-68
68-5=4*B-B
63=3*B
63/3=3*B/3
21=B ---> Brandon's age is 21 years.
From, Equation (1),
M=21+12=33 ---> Micheal is 33 years old.
