How to make melodies/chords more interesting?

I’m a noob when it comes to making music but I have a little problem when creating melodies/chords. I made a nice loop in fl studio but I feel it’s to repetitive. I’ve tried adding more chords and melodies to that loop ( as in extending the chords/melody so it doesn’t have to much repetition) that I created but nothing sounds good. when I added extra chords/ melodies if feels like it has no sense of direction and does not sound good. In my mind I feel like it’s missing something but idk what or how to apply it. Do you guys have any tips on how to make your melodies/ chords less repetitive? Also Just to clarify the reason I’m asking is because I trying to have my 8 bar loop reapeat a few times and then switch it up ya know what I mean.

Great question!

The best advice I can give you to improve your chord knowledge and vocabulary is to know exactly what is a chord? A normal Triad Chord for example E Major has the notes E G# B. This consists of a Root, a Major Third and a perfect Fifth. Learn this for all Major and Minor Chords. After you learn Major and Minor Triads then start adding 7th's to each chord. After understanding the inner workings of the chord and what intervals major and minor triads are made of then I would start memorizing the chords in each key, which is super simple. All major keys are the same and all minor keys are the same.

in E major : I ii III IV V vi viiDim

7 chords make up the key represented by roman numerals.

Now find relationships between the minor and major keys and start modulating between keys!

This would be a great start to making chords more interesting!
