What part of speech is можно here?

> Можно я попью чая?What part of speech here is "можно"? Also, if possible, can you parse this sentence, please?

Oksana L.

The word “can/можно” expresses the modal possibility of performing an action or allowing someone to do something. Its antonym is the word “cannot/ нельзя.” This word expresses a modal assessment of the subject's state, his desire, readiness or need to perform some action. In the morphology of the modern Russian language, they are called modal impersonal predicative words, or words of the category of state. In impersonal sentences, the word "can/можно", as a rule, acts as a predicate. The sentence "Can I have some tea?"/ Можно я попью чая?" denotes a request for some tea. Also it can be considered as a polite form. This word can be considered a polite form that serves as a request. I hope my answer is useful. Best wishes.

Depending on the context, this word can be either 1) a special part of speech called the "category of state/condition" word, or 2) an interjection or 3) a modal word. Case 1 is when this word means a possibility to perform some action or a permission: "Сегодня у меня есть время, поэтому можно пойти в кафе поужинать", "Можно мне позвонить по вашему телефону?". Case 2: "Разве можно так легко одеваться в такой холод!", or "Как можно брать чужие вещи!" - here the word in combinations "разве можно" and "как можно" expresses somebody's feelings/emotions. Case 3: in the combinations like "можно сказать" or "можно подумать" meaning the degree of probability: "Можно подумать, у неё есть серьёзные аргументы!"; in this case, the word is a part of introductory word combination.
