There is a slight difference here, but it not so critical in this particular case.
What is correct: "постучи его по спине" or "постучи ему по спине"?
My sentence starts as:> Если человек поперхнулся - ...

Both options are correct but I'd say that "постучи ему по спине" is more commonly used.
