Why is "счастливый" in instrumental case in the following sentence?

I translated the sentence "`You make me happy.`" to Russian with an online translator. And it translated that as "**ты делаешь меня счастливым.**". Why is the instrumental case necessary here?

So to briefly answer this, you aren't using счастливый as an adjective in it's traditional sense in this sentence. Anytime someone "is" something, it takes instrumental case. You aren't describing the object, you are more describing a state of being of the object. Another example would be "I would be happy to help!" in Russian it would translate with instrumental "Я бы счастливым помочь!". This is because you are explaining your state of being. Instrumental case can be used in a number of situations; your example falls under situation 4.

1. When actions are performed by a few subjects together (Me and my mom went grocery shopping - Мы с мамой пошли за продуктами.
2. Without prepositions, to denote an tool ( I am writing with a pen - Я пишу ручкой.)
3. With verbs интересоваться, увлекаться, заниматься, любоваться, гордиться (Мой брат интересуется политикой. Я горжусь смоими детьми.)
4. After the verbs быть, стать, работать (Мой папа работает инжинером, а мама врачом. Я хочу стать художником.)
5. With certain prepositions– in defining meaning (with preposition "с" when you are trying to answer a question "what type"? or "what kind'?: (Я люблю суп с цветной капустой. I like soup with cauliflower. What type of soup? With cauliflower.)
6. To denote a place with prepositions перед, за, рядом с, над, под, между : (Мои родители живут за границей. Между этими двумя улицами находится парк.)
