Hello William, I am so glad you are doing math this early in the morning. Let's set up the problem.
Let x be the distance that Candice drives
Let 2x be the distance that Marcos drives. It is 2x because he drives twice as far as Candice, and we know that twice is translated as 2* a variable.
Now, another key word in the problem is TOGETHER, which implies, of course, addition. So, we're going to be adding.
(Candice distance)+ (Marcos distance)= 66
x + 2x = 66
3x = 66 adding the x's
x= 22 She drove 22 miles
So, the equation is x+ 2x = 66
