A field, rectangular in shape, contains 864 square metres; if it were 4 metres longer and 3 metres narrower its area would be the same. Find its dimensions.

You are going to get a nasty quadratic eqation as follow:

Let L = length and W = width

 

LW = 864

(L+4)(W-3) = 864

 

Set W = 864/L and substitute in the 2nd equation which will give you a quadratic which can be solved by formula.
