rachel Manuel and Lamar have 106 dollars. Rachel has 6 dollars less than Manuel and Lamar has 3 times what Rachel has. How much do they have in their wallet

Rachel Manuel and Lamar have 106 dollars:

R + M + L = 106

 

Rachel has $6 less than Manuel:

R = M - 6

 

Lamar has 3 times what Rachel has:

L = 3R = 3(M-6)

L = 3M - 18

 

Substituting M-6 in place of R and 3M-18 in place of L in 1st equation,

we can solve for M to find how much money Manuel has

 

R + M + L = 106

M - 6 + M + 3M - 18 = 106

5M - 24 = 106

5M = 130

M = 26

 

Manuel has $26
