They viewed all male children as future soldiers. All males were to be raised to be soldiers, starting with training at age 5, completion of training at age 15, then 20 years of military service, followed by "discharge" at age 35. Unhealthy or weak male children were abandoned to die.
Female children were viewed as future mothers of soldiers. I am not sure how the Spartans treated unhealthy or weak female children, but I suspect they were also abandoned, just like unhealthy or weak males.
Ancient Spartan society was perhaps the ultimate example of survival of the fittest, as far as children are concerned. You can learn all about these things from Plutarch's classic book, On Sparta.
