Odysseus loves his wife Penelope and wants to return to Ithaca. However he is seduced by Calypso and although he refuses to become her husband and an immortal, he cannot break free so easily. He remains with Calypso for 7 years on her beautiful island. Calypso has the power to seduce men and keep them from attaining their own goals. It is not Odysseus alone who finally allows him to leave. Rather, Athena and Zeus send Hermes to Calypso to persuade her to let Odysseus go, and he leaves.
