To subtract fractions, they must have the same denominator. First: find the least common multiple between 8 and 16 which is 16. Next convert the fraction 5/8 to an equivalent fraction with 16 as the new denominator. We multiplied the denominator by 2 to get 16. Now multiply the numerator by 2 also which gives the equivalent fraction of 10/16. 5/8 =10/16.
10/16 - 3/16 = 7/16
