I did it differently, but achieved the same result. 

3x + 5 < 2x -1 original equation

Step A.   3x + 5 -5 < 2x -1 -5  subtract 5 from each side (-5 + -1 = -6)

     Result A.   3x < 2x - 6  result of subtracting 5 from each side

Step B.   3x - 2x < 2x - 2x -6 subtract -2x from each side (to continue isolating X)

     Result B.  1x < -6 result of subtracting - 2x from each side 

Final  1x  < -6 =x < -6   (because 1x is the same thing as x)

Answer =   x < - 6

3x + 5 < 2x -1 ; subtract each side by 2x

3x -2x + 5 < 2x -2x -1 ; do subtraction

x + 5 < -1 ; subtract each side by 5

x + 5 -5 < -1 -5  ; do subtraction

x < -6  ; therefore x is less than -6 (answer)

      To solve this inequality we need to isolate the variable x.

       3x + 5 < 2x -1                          (original equation)

      -2x         -2x                              (subtract 2x from both sides of inequality and add)

           -5      -5                              (subtract 5 from both sides of inequality and add)

       x < -6 -----------(answer)

To check your answer take any number which is less than -6 and substitute in original equation and solve. For example let's take -7 as the value of x. We'll substitute

3x+5<2x-1

3(-7) + 5 < 2(-7) -1

-16 < -15  (True). So, this way you can check your work.
