This is the appropriate time to remind students of Algebra that they should MEMORIZE THE SQUARES OF ALL THE INTEGERS FROM 1 TO 25, at least. With this information, oneinstantly recognizes the square root of 441 as 21, the sidelength, and therefore x = 21 - 13 = 8.  NO CALCULATOR NEEDED.

Later on, in Algbra II, various powers of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 6, 8 and 9 should be memorized in order to do certain classes of logarithm problems.

Boo to those who faint at "memorization"--it's quite useful in life. You memorize birthdays, phone numbers, passwords, etc. so why not key arithmetic facts?
