double the 3 and halve the 7 ==> 6 by 3.5 works ... All the best, ma'am :)

L = 2W-1, where L is the length, and W is the width.

area = LW = (2W-1)W = 21

Collect all terms in one side by degree,

2W^2 - W - 21 = 0

=> (2W-7)(W+3) = 0

W = 7/2 = 3.5 ft

L = 2W-1 = 7-1 = 6 ft
