You eat 1/4 of you quesadilla. Later you eat 1/3 of what is left. How much of the quesadilla did you eat?

You eat 1/4 so 3/4 is left.

You eat 1/3 of the 3/4 so 2/3 of the 3/4 is left.

You need to find the common denominator between 1/4 and 1/3. For this case it would be 4 x 3 = 12. The top and bottom of 1/4 would then be multiplied by 3 to get 3/12. The top and bottom of 1/3 would be multiplied by 4 to get 4/12.

 

Assume that the whole quesadilla is 12/12. 12/12 - 3/12= 9/12

9/12 - 4/12 = 5/12.

 

Therefore, 7/12 of the quesadilla has been eaten and 5/12 of the quesadilla would be left.
