Grammar,

Grammar

"Grammar Queen," that's me! There are numerous aspects of grammar to be considered in any language, and with English, they can be particularly cumbersome. I have prepared countless lessons specifically designed for my students’ most vexing challenges. Here are a few: indefinite pronouns, modifier placement, prepositional phrases, proper punctuation, sentence structure, and verb tensing. If you struggle with these or other areas of English grammar, I can help. We will discuss, study, and practice grammatical rules until your newly acquired skills become habits in your writing and in your speech.
Proofreading

Proofreading

My detail-oriented and A-type personality, combined with my English and writing background, makes me the perfect proofreader! I have experience with the deeper levels of editing as well. In writing workshops, I have offered line by line critiques of aspiring authors’ works. In my roles as substitute teacher, teaching assistant, fellow student, and private tutor, I have read students’ essays and suggested revisions. I refined the manuscript of a writer’s romance novel being prepared for self-publishing. Having had my own thesis work edited on a monthly basis by professionally published authors, I learned what to look for in others’ writing and appropriate ways to comment. I pass that knowledge on to the students I tutor.

English

ACT English,

ACT English

As your private ACT tutor, I will not only practice sample questions with you, but I’ll also offer general test-taking strategies. We will review concepts that underlie the types of questions you struggle with most, which will lead you to your best possible score. Together, we can do this! English is one of five sections included on the ACT in addition to math, reading, science, and an optional writing section. In 45 minutes, you’ll be expected to answer 75 multiple choice questions based on five prose passages of varying lengths. Your mechanical and rhetorical skills will be tested. You will need familiarity with proper punctuation, grammatical rules, and effective organization, among other items. But don’t worry! I am here to help you with all of that. Contact me today to get started on your path toward ACT success!
ACT Reading,

ACT Reading

As your private ACT tutor, I will give you hints and offer strategies to make the seemingly impossible task possible and doable. Together, we will practice sample questions and target the aspects of reading comprehension you struggle with most. Reading is one of five sections included on the ACT in addition to English, math, science, and an optional writing section. Within a 35-minute block, you’ll be expected to read four college-level prose passages of approximately 1,000 words each (or a pair of shorter passages) and answer 40 multiple choice questions based on them. You’ll read from a variety of genres — fiction, social studies, the humanities, and natural sciences. Expect to see detail questions as well as inference questions. If all of that sounds overwhelming, it needn’t be. Contact me today to get started on the road toward mastering the ACT reading section!

I can help you boost your vocabulary, elevate your conversation ability, enhance your reading comprehension, sharpen your spelling, or advance the effectiveness of your writing.

SAT Reading,

SAT Reading

Let me show you how to master the SAT reading section by introducing you to my unique fourfold approach to standardized test prep! The “Reading Test” is one part of the SAT’s “Evidence-Based Reading and Writing” section. It consists of fifty-two multiple-choice questions that you must complete within sixty-five minutes. In that time, you must also be able to read and understand multiple passages on a variety of topics. In our tutoring sessions, we will review many sample questions like the ones you’ll see on the actual test. We will learn to distinguish between the main idea of a passage and its author’s attitude toward the subject. We’ll learn to identify word components that will help you determine the meanings of words you might not have heard before. I’ll help you identify not only the facts of what you read, but the implications as well. We’ll also learn to choose passage evidence upon which to base your answers to questions, which will be key on the latest version of the SAT. I’ll offer you general test-taking strategies, too, for earning your best possible score. Contact me today to get started on your path toward SAT success!

Writing

Writing

I have experience with several categories of writing and their various genres. I earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in creative writing and a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a concentration in professional/technical writing. As a lyricist, I had seven songs published on a professionally recorded album. I won a campus-wide poetry contest. Whether it’s a personal letter you’re working on, a simple essay, a poetry explication, or a research paper, I can help. As your writing tutor, I would start by reviewing a sample of your work or a first draft of an assignment. Depending upon the goals we've set for your tutoring sessions, I would proofread, edit, or offer a line by line critique of your piece. I would plan lessons targeting the weakest areas of your writing. Perhaps it’s structure, tone, grammar, or citations you need help with. I am here, eager to serve.

College Counseling

Over the past several years, I have helped numerous high school students prepare for college. I’ve done this on a for-hire basis and as a volunteer mentor. I’d be happy to walk you through the process as well. There is more to getting ready for higher education than simply taking the ACT and SAT exams, which I can help you study for. There is also the academic résumé that needs to be crafted, the personal essay that needs to be drafted, and the numerous prompted questions that need to be answered. Don’t forget preparing for the interview, too. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by one or more of these necessary tasks, please allow me to assist you. I’ll help you present to potential colleges the best version of yourself. Together, we can do this!

Science

ACT Science

ACT Science

The science section of the ACT requires that you answer 40 multiple-choice questions in 35 minutes. If science is not your best subject, this might sound scary. Let me tell you a secret: this section is more about reading comprehension than it is about science knowledge. There are a few basic scientific concepts that it might be helpful to know before taking your exam, but that’s all. All 40 science questions can be answered based upon the information presented to you in 6 different passages, some of which will contain graphics. As your private ACT tutor, I’ll help you develop an effective system for tackling each question. We’ll talk about focusing your reading, zeroing in on what’s being asked, and using a process of elimination to get rid of wrong answer choices. All of these tactics will help boost your ACT science score.

knowledgeable and helpful tutor

We talked about lots of good strategies that will help me to be more time efficient on the test. After we set our goals, we went over the general tests and tips for question answering. We also did some practices on past SAT problems. Mary is a very nice person and her test tactics are helpful.

Mary was one of the most patient people I've worked with

Mary was very patient and taught me about how to understand what the TEAS questions may be asking me. She brought me back to the basics and helped me through some of my anxiety while studying.

Colleen, 8 lessons with Mary

Efficient and knowledgeable.

She goes into detail about the topic of discussion. She has a lot of energy during the sessions. She is very eager to help. Mary is always on time for the sessions and she is really great about sending any pre session information early so I can have it readily available when I start.

Karen, 11 lessons with Mary

Knowledgeable and interesting

Mary worked with me on punctuation and rules of grammar. She is very detailed and keeps you focused. She was able to refresh me on past skills and constructively critiqued my writing.

Sadia, 1 lesson with Mary

This is all it takes

I've let my son interface with Mary (English) and a different gent for math, not injecting myself. I overheard my son remarking (unsolicited) how good his tutors were. Comforting thing for a father to overhear.

Doug, 10 lessons with Mary

Patient, understanding, and knowledgeable

My daughter had Mary for helping her in reading , vocabulary and writing . In her time with Mary she has improved tremendously. She is great at always encouraging and making her understand. Thank you so much
