My name is Alex M., and I’m a 2020 magna cum laude graduate from the University of Oklahoma, earning bachelors’ degrees in physics and mathematics with a minor in computer science. I have also attended Texas A&M University as a Ph.D. student in mathematics for several years.

Because mathematics is the foundation for all the sciences, I believe it takes flexibility and a variety of approaches to fully grasp its principles. That empowers students to excel.

In my experience teaching both peers and younger students, I find that the conventional approach is not always the one that clicks with a student. That’s why I use examples and everyday metaphors to bring understanding to complex concepts. Students excel when they have a true understanding of the ideas underpinning math, physics, and computer science. The idea is to learn the principles underlying a subject in such a way that you can look at a problem and figure out how to solve it.

While taking the courses in my degree programs, I spent considerable time exploring different ways to approach the material to get a deeper feel for it. I used those experiences to explain to peers what was going on under the surface, which often led to a-ha moments for those with whom I worked.

I am flexible and can work with students both in-person and virtually. I can tailor instruction to meet both immediate and long-term goals and welcome the use of resources related to the student’s immediate coursework as well as providing supplemental lessons from my own library. Recommendations from parents pertaining to materials and approaches are always welcome. I respond within 72 hours to tutoring requests.

Approved Subjects

C++

C++

I first learned C++ in high school, where I used it to write physics engines. I made use of it on many occasions throughout my time in college, where it proved invaluable in courses on data structures and machine learning. I have also used C++ in a number of curiosity-driven personal projects, several of which have required me to devise specialized data structures.
Calculus

Calculus

I have undergraduate degrees in physics and mathematics, and I have used integral calculus for a variety of courses and personal projects.
Computer Science

Computer Science

I have been programming as a hobby since high school, and I have worked with a number of languages including Java, C++, TI-BASIC, SICP LISP, Mathematica, VHDL, HTML and Haskell. I earned a minor in computer science as an undergraduate, and I sometimes applied computer programming to other courses. Some of my coursework also involved the more theoretical aspects of computer science, such as formal logic and decision problems.
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

I have undergraduate degrees in mathematics and physics, and I have completed courses in ordinary and partial differential equations.
Discrete Math

Discrete Math

I have taken courses in various areas of mathematics, including discrete mathematics. Outside of classes, I have spent many hours on curiosity-driven research, which has led me to find and internalize a wide variety of mathematical results. Discrete mathematics appears frequently in my research: combinatorics comes up most frequently in the contexts of probability and formal power series, graph theory applies to many projects involving programming or electronics, and abstract algebra---particularly group theory---arises from most situations that require a rigorous treatment of symmetry.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

I took courses in linear algebra and abstract linear algebra while pursuing a degree in mathematics, and I have made regular use of the concepts from those subject areas for several years in various courses and personal projects.
Logic

Logic

I have taken a course in logic, but most of my experience with it has come from computer programming and writing mathematical proofs. I earned a degree in mathematics and a minor in computer science as an undergraduate, so my coursework ensured that I did plenty of both; I have also spent a great deal of my spare time on curiosity-driven projects in math, physics and computer programming.
Physics

Physics

I have undergraduate degrees in mathematics and physics, and I often used concepts from both in courses and personal projects. I also had a summer job at EdVenture Children's Museum, where I developed and used methods for explaining the physics of flight to children and adults through the use of paper airplanes.

Knowledgeable and willing to find unique ways to help

I went to Alex tying to get help in a new language, Plutus. Plutus is very similar to a language he was familiar with, Haskell. Alex was willing to spend some time to learn and understand Plutus in order to help me. He picks up concepts very fast and was able to quickly understand live code and explain it to me. I plan on having more sessions with Alex as our schedules permit. He was also aware of the time and let me know when we were approaching an hour, which is appreciated when you are paying based on time. Anthony

Knowledgeable, not very helpful.

George talked a lot about Calculus, but I did tell him I learned best by doing examples. We went through most of one example, and I was still left confused but I went and figured it out the next day. All of the tutors I have had make me feel like I'm a nuisance. I mean there's a reason I need a tutor. I'm not intuitive with math and it's been 20 years since I had challenging math classes. I think George kept on talking passed the agreed tutoring session because he was hoping I wouldn't stop him so he could get some more time on the clock for himself. I am a wife and mother of 3 in the last course to finish my undergrad. I need help, not a presentation on how you know stuff. Does he also sell used cars?

great teacher and sticks with it

He is helping me with c++ and is very helpful. He sticks with the lesson. He does make sure you get the material

great teacher!

George helped me understand material for discrete structures and he was very patient and thorough. i will definitely be using his services for future tutoring.
