I specialize in basic reading instruction for struggling readers including those with dyslexia. I am trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach and have six years experience teaching elementary and middle school students. The O-G approach is a phonics based, multisensory, proven approach to teaching reading, spelling, and writing. It is specifically designed and tailored to meet the needs of dyslexic students and other struggling readers.
I also tutor math for the elementary grades. Whether I'm teaching a child math or reading skills, I strive to include interactive methods and learning games to engage the child's interest. I have plenty of experience working successfully with students with attention deficits. I use an individualized reward system to motivate each child.
Sentence and paragraph composition are included in the curriculum. Handwriting and cursive instruction may be provided upon request. Vocabulary growth is emphasized in reading lessons.
I assess each student's needs and individualize the instruction of math skills. I utilize manipulatives for hands-on learning, use mnemonics (memory aids or tricks) for mastering math facts.
Direct, step-by-step instruction, practice to mastery, and continuous review of phonetic concepts are the cornerstone of successful phonics instruction. Yvonne is extremely patient with my 11 year old son who is dyslexic. She is able to keep his attention by using interactive learning methods. He enjoys his time with her. I will be using her on a regular basis and would highly recommend her to others!
Uses different techniques to build my daughter's handwriting skills, also showed me a few things that I could do differently to help her learn. Very pleased with the lesson, look forward to more lessons in the future!
I have completed a 2-week training course and a practicum in the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading instruction for dyslexic and struggling readers. My practicum included 10 tutoring sessions observed by a certified O-G senior fellow. I have 5 years experience tutoring dozens of students in the phonics based O-G program. I also have a week or more of in-service training in the Project Read approach, a phonics based offshoot of Orton-Gillingham.
