Deaf culture came about because of American Sign Language. My parents were both Deaf and both attended different schools. My mother went to Lexington School for the Deaf, which was a strictly oral-method school at the time. She was punished for using her hands to gesture or point to what she wanted. In the girls' bathroom, however, my mother and my aunt both learned sign language. My father's school was different, using both ASL and lipreading to teach subjects. Strong friendships forged in childhood continued into adulthood. Deaf adults gathered in homes on a regular basis to communicate in their language. The language bond between Deaf adults resulted in the culture that developed in their communities.
ASL and Deaf culture are fundamentally inseparable because ASL is not merely a language but the very foundation and means for communicating the shared experiences, values, traditions, and identity of the Deaf community. As a unique visual language with its own grammar and syntax, ASL enables the transmission of Deaf history, art, humor, and social norms, fostering a deep sense of belonging and cultural pride.

ASL is my preferred language as a person who is Hard of Hearing (Culturally-Deaf) and part of the Deaf community. My primary way of taking in information is through my eyes. ASL is a visual language that was created specifically for us. I feel I can best express myself and connect with other Deaf people through ASL, as culture is best understood from the perspective of the people within it. Therefore, ASL is the heart of experiencing and understanding my Deaf culture.
