Why ASL and Deaf Culture are inseparate?

I cannot speak for Deaf and Hard of Hearing people as a hearing person, ASL is a beautiful language based on the French Sign Language brought over here by Gallaudet. The oral method came about due to the belief that signing inhibited the ability to speak. Alexander Graham Bell who had both a Deaf wife and mother believed in oralism and was the driving force behind the movement. ASL almost went extinct. The teaching methods to teach speech were found to be abusive. Hearing children pick up speech through watching and hearing the adults around them, but Deaf children were abused if they did not make the right mouth movements. Oralism died out and ASL became the standard. What hearing people were trying to do with oralism is try to mask the deafness and make hearing people more comfortable. They do the same now with other disabilities like autism. The two are linked because ASL helped create the community and the culture and history. Before there was ASL in this country. There might have been some regional signs and many Deaf kids were living on the streets. Gallaudet was a hearing man who was visiting a friend and he met his children. One of the children named Mary was Deaf. He found a way to communicate with her through play and hand gestures and pictures. He got throughly interested and went to Great Britain and France to learn more. He brought back with him one of the leading experts in FSL Leclerc and they opened Gallaudet University in Washington DC. Mary was one of their first students. It is the only Deaf College in the country. It started ASL in this country and opened up students to learning.
