Just to further reinforce William’s answer if you google Nicaraguan Sign Language, you will learn the really cool story of how school children in Nicaragua developed their sign language with its own syntax, grammar, etc. This language was born out of need amongst a group that had no linguistic inspiration. It was born on the playground so to speak. Language finds a way amongst people of shared background and experience. No one person developed this language. It was developed amongst a specific generation of children and is still in use today.

American Sign Language is heavily influenced by France's. Look into Laurent Clerc, Reverend Thomas Galladuet, Alice Cogswel. Here is a link. Please (under the tour section) click and read the stories of all the locations. Juila Brace. What ever you do DO NOT use wikipida. Its editable and hearing people who want to control Deaf world can go in and edit that to their narritives.
