Learning ASL from a Deaf teacher is very special. When you get the opportunity to learn from a person from that specific community, it enhances the learning experience by a lot. I had Deaf professors all throughout college that taught my ASL courses, and I can see the difference between a hearing person and a Deaf persons way of teaching. I think just naturally having a Deaf teacher is so much more beneficial and a great thing someone should experience when learning ASL. I am not saying that hearing people can't teach ASL, but what I am saying is that being Deaf or hard of hearing brings another level of learning experience.

Learning ASL from a qualified Deaf teacher means you're learning from someone who uses the language naturally every day. You gain accurate signs, real grammar, and deep cultural insight. It’s not just about vocabulary — it’s about understanding the heart of the language and the community behind it.
