What the short term causes of the First and Second World Wars have in common is the aggression of strong powers against smaller states. The outbreak of World War I was the result of the Austro-Hungarian Empire's insistence on invading and eliminating Serbia - the aggression of a strong power against a smaller state. The outbreak of World War II, in Europe at any rate, was the result of Nazi Germany's insistence in invading and eliminating Poland - the aggression of a strong power against a smaller - or at least weaker - state.
