About Paul

I love to teach history. I am irresistibly compelled to help people to understand the world we live in by gaining a better understanding of its past. In short, I have a passion for my subject that is infectious. I spent nine years teaching history at Delaware County Community College, as well as at Rider University, and I am currently a volunteer instructor for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute affiliated with Widener University. My approach to teaching involves bringing clarity to complex topics and not assuming any prior knowledge of the subject in question. Because I simply find virtually every period in history, every location on the globe, and every aspect of human society interesting, I have developed a very broad knowledge base. I can bring the subject of history alive. I love to teach history. I am irresistibly compelled to help people to understand the world we live in by gaining a better understanding of its past. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Classics

My lifelong study of history, including my work in earning a BA in Political Science and a Masters in History, has enabled me to develop a solid understanding of the civilizations of Ancient Greece and Rome, the foundation of Western Civilization. I have read extensively on and taught about the history of archaic and Classical Greece, the Hellenistic Age, and Republican and Imperial Rome. This includes the various aspects of these civilizations: their social and political orders, their religious beliefs and practices, their economies, their art, architecture, theater, literature, and intellectual achievements. In fact, I'm currently teaching a course on the decline and fall of the Roman Empire.

Government & Politics

BS in Political Science from West Chester University.
MA in History from Temple University.
Taught ten different history courses 53 times at DCCC, including U.S. history courses 17 times.
Taught 13 different history courses for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.

Religion

Having earned a Masters in History and taught U.S. History, Western Civilization, and World History courses in my nine years at Delaware County Community College, I learned a great deal about the major religions - their origins, theology, evolution, different branches, and, of course, their role in historical events. This includes the various Pagan Faiths (Egypt, Greece and Rome, Celtic and Germanic peoples), Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, the Sikh Faith, and Taoism. Moreover, raised Catholic, I attended religion classes through elementary and high school and, in my travels, have visited churches, mosques, and temples in Europe (including Turkey), Peru, Egypt, India, and Nepal.

Social Studies

Having earned a BA in Political Science and a Masters in History, and having taught U.S. History, Western Civilization, and World History courses for nine years at Delaware County Community College, I have a thorough understanding of the social sciences and humanities. I have both studied and taught about sociology, psychology, religion, the arts, politics, history, geography, and economics. In addition, I have written about and had published numerous articles whose subjects have involved some or all of these subjects.

World History

I have a Master's Degree from Temple University in Military and Diplomatic History. I have a Bachelor's Degree from West Chester University in Political Science.

I worked as a History Teacher at Delaware County Community College, where I spent nine years teaching, among other courses, World History, Western Civilization, U.S. History, the history of China, the history of the Italian Renaissance, and the history of Ireland.

I also worked as a History Teacher for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, where I spent Five years teaching, among other courses, the Fall of the Roman Empire, the history of Latin America, the history of World War I, and the history of the Spanish Civil War.
