Most orthodontists provide comprehensive staff training for their dental assistants to place buttons, place the colorful bands around new wires, take radiographs, photographs and so much more. Typically dental hygienists work for general dentists, periodontists, prosthodontists or pediatric dentists to provide their services. These are all examples of the types of providers who would refer their patients to the orthodontist.
