Nicolette...just a small hint to help you answering these kinds of problems. Your problem:
2(y + 1) + 2(y – 2) =
Before you begin to answer this kind of problem...what do you anticipate the final solution will be. If you don't know, I would strongly suggest you talk with you teacher/instructor, to help you visualize what the final solution...
The next thing is to recognize what method, way, operation you are going to use to get your answer. The Order of Operations is mentioned above. If the Order of Operations if unfamiliar to you, again, talk with your instructor/teacher....about using PEMDAS...Parenthesis...Exponents..Multiplication...Division...Additions...Subtraction...with combining the principle of like terms, is how you would get your answer. A small analogy...if you don't know where you're going and how you're going to get there...gonna have problems.
By knowing what the solution will look like and what operation you'll use to solve it...you have to tools to being able to solve these kinds of problem....then you will be the Master.
