As a project and program manager, I had to make many presentations for status, design reviews, and more so PowerPoint was very valuable. I had to track many things that did not fit into MS Project, another tool I used a lot. You might need a list of contacts, their position, their email, phone, etc and so Excel was useful. You might need a more detailed list of some work efforts and again Excel was valuable. Project documentation like training manuals, design documents, test reports, and more require Word.
