As a project and program manager, I had to make many presentations for status, design reviews, and more so PowerPoint was very valuable. I had to track many things that did not fit into MS Project, another tool I used a lot. You might need a list of contacts, their position, their email, phone, etc and so Excel was useful. You might need a more detailed list of some work efforts and again Excel was valuable. Project documentation like training manuals, design documents, test reports, and more require Word. Google now has free tools to do three of these but not Project..
