If I spoke Spanish to a Portuguese speaker, how well would I be understood?

In general terms, the vocabulary, verbs and even some expressions can be the same or quite similar. The spelling may vary a bit but both languages are very close which makes learning Portuguese as a Spanish speaker - or the other way around - an enjoyable and surprising experience, given the similarities.

The verbs and nouns are nearly the same. If a Portugal Portuguese speaker speaks with a Spanish speaker there is probably 80-90% understanding between the two. If a Brazilian speaker converses with a Spanish speaker, the understanding drops to about 60-70% because of the way the words are pronounced. The written language is probably 90% understandable. In all cases, the Portuguese speaker will understand nearly 100% of the Spanish.

If you spoke in a slow pace you would be 90% understood. It is easier for Portuguese speakers to understand Spanish than it is for Spanish speakers to understand Portuguese.
