Yes, they do! I lived in Brazil for over 20 years, and I have been in Portugal twice in my life. Although portuguese is not my native language, I speak it fluently, and I am able to undersrand both accents. It is a matter of practicing the ear to catch the accent.

Yes, Brazilians can understand Portuguese in Portugal. I am Brazilian, and I lived in Portugal for six month. The Portuguese people and I did not have any problem to understand each other. The differences were the accent and the use of the verbal form. In Portugal, they use the infinitive form a lot, while the Brazilians use the gerund. For example in the sentence ' I am talking with her, at this moment.': In Portugal, they say, 'Estou a falar com ela, neste instante," while in Brazil, we say, 'Estou falando com ela, neste instante.'

I've been to Portugal and what I noticed is that for us Brazilians is much easier to understand Portuguese from Portugal than the other way around. Interesting fact: I've been told in Portugal that before the invasions and the influence of the Arabic language, Portuguese from Portugal and from Brazil were quite similar.

I´ve never been to Portugal, but I have interacted with Portuguese speakers before.

I can say that we, Brazilians are able to keep a conversation going with a Portuguese speaker, but we would have trouble understanding some words, since the lexical is a bit different, like it happens in American and British English.

For example:

-casa de banho x banheiro (bathroom)

-bicha x fila (line/queue)

In addition, the pronunciation is completely different (intonation and stress)
