Dentestry Problem

Today I went into a Indian Springs dentist office planning to get my chipped tooth filled, after entering the dentist office the assistant told me it would be a good idea to get a cap to my tooth instead of getting it filled, I insisted all I wanted was it filled then the dentist walked in and said, "You have two options either you leave or I cap your tooth." I again insited that I just wanted it filled but after a couple of minutes of discussion I felt pressured into getting it capped so he set a date for it to get capped. I just feel I have been pressured into this decision and wonder what you guys would of done and if many he's trying to scam me for more money. It also should be noted in the past at different dentestry offices they just filled my tooth and never even mentioned a cap and that this was my first time at this dentist office.

Well, usually, if they recommend a cap or crown, then it is for a reason. If you're worried, go see another dentist for a second opinion. Answers online cannot tell you what you need without pictures and x-rays, and even then, that may not be enough.

I worked chair side as a dental assistant for a few years. I would get a second opinion if you are weary about the diagnosis. However just so you have an understanding of your treatment planned with money aside, why its treatment planned, in order to make an educated decision to a permeant problem. Teeth have a nerve in it that once decay or fracture reach it is when a Root Canal/Crown or extracted is needed. How ever since yours seems to be just a filling keeps falling out. In order for a dentist to be a able to bond the filling material to the tooth again it will involve taking away a small part of healthy tooth every time it is needed to be refilled. It's possible that the dentin is getting thin and the nerve is compromised to be exposed. In order to prevent a root canal or tooth lose, a crown is treatment planned for the longevity of that tooth.
