Vernacular Brazilian Portuguese is still spoken in Florianopolis, Brazil by the more educated population of the area. It is a continuum of the original Portuguese language spoken by colonizers. Portuguese was extremely modified, especially in accent, in the various regions of Brazil. That change happened because after the Portuguese colonization, migrants from all over Europe moved to Brazil. Slaves were also brought in from Africa and the Portuguese language was enriched by their contribution as well.

Antenor Nascentes proposed a division of Brazilian Portuguese in dialects according to region because the sound of the spoken language is so different from state to state that the a speaker from the South, for example, can sound foreigner to a speaker of the North.
