Hello, I was a certified dental assistant for 4 years and in that time worked as a clinical skills coordinator in the Dental Assisting Program at a local community college. Cavities and tooth pain should always be checked out by your dentist, especially since these symptoms work as information systems to tell us something more serious may be going on. Your dentist should perform an exam and take xrays to determine the extent of the damage. If you have an infection, pain medicine will not help, but some people find temporary relief by rubbing oil of cloves on their gums.
