Hello, I was a certified dental assistant for 4 years and in that time worked as a clinical skills coordinator in the Dental Assisting Program at a local community college. It is normal to have some discomfort after a tooth extraction. The level of pain depends on where in the mouth, what type of tooth it is, if you are an adult vs a child losing baby teeth, and if this extraction required surgery. Occasionally, some people may experience what is called "referred pain", where the nerves along the jaw carry pain to sites other than the extraction. If the the tooth socket has stopped bleeding, won't stop bleeding even after pressure and gauze for a few hours, and/or your breath is really stinky, you should call your dentist immediately. These could be signs of an infection. Otherwise, if the pain is bothering you, a trip to the dentist is always recommended so they can make sure everything is healing up well. Hope this helps!
