Since Dave walkes at 9 km/h and walked for 1/2 h he walked 4 1/2 km.
Dan then must've walked 8km - 4 1/2 km or 3 1/2 km in 1/2 hr.
Using the formula Distance = Rate * Time where Dan's Distance is 3 1/2 km, and Dan's Time is 1/2hr, we can solve for his Rate.
Distance = Rate * Time
3 1/2km = x * 1/2h In this equation multiply both sides by 2 or dividing both sides by 1/2
2*(3 1/2km) = (x * 1/2)*2, X = 7 km/h
